“Poker slang is a key step on your journey to becoming a pro in this game!”
Poker Slang
Once you learn how to play poker, it is important to learn how to speak when you play poker, as well as to understand what is being said; therefore, today the main theme that we would like to tell you about is poker slang. Surely, there are a lot of words to know; however, for a start, we would like to introduce you to one word for almost every letter in the alphabet.
- A – Airball – a term to say that a person is bluffing.
- B – Burn Card – before the community cards are dealt, the top card in the deck, known as the “burn card,” is discarded face-down to hide the next card in line and stop any possible cheating or unfair advantage.
- C – Crabs – you are dealt crabs if you are dealt any combination of pocket threes.
- D – Dead Money – refers to chips or money in the pot that players who have since folded or are otherwise out of the running for the round’s prize have contributed. Pot odds and strategy choices can be greatly impacted by dead money. Given that the other players have less to claim, dead money, for instance, may encourage a player to adopt a more assertive posture.
- F – Family Pot – a multi-way pot is created when the majority of players at the poker table call the initial wager, which is frequently the big blind, in order to participate in a hand.
- G – Going South – when a player “goes south,” it indicates that they took some of their chips off the table to lower their stake.
- H – Hit And Run – occurs when a player wins a large pot or multiple consecutive banks and then opts to quit the game. (We do not recommend practicing it)
- I – Idiot End – this term describes a straight draw, in which the player is drawing to the lowest possible straight. If there are opportunities to make higher straights, but the player can only make the weakest one, then it’s drawing to the “idiot end” of the straight.
- J – Jam – The term for raising all-in, and it refers to a scenario in which a player places all of their money in the center of the pot.
- L – Live One – a term to characterize a poker player who lacks skill and is therefore a target at the table. This player does not care losing a lot of money.
- M – Middle Position – the term is used to describe the seats that follow the early position players but come before the button and cutoff. Because they may observe the actions of early position players before making their own choices, players in these seats can play with a wider variety of hands in a more flexible and strategic manner.
- N – Nut Nut – is the next step up after “nut” because it refers to the hand that possesses both the nuts and the potential to become even better nuts.
- P – Pwned – indicates that the opposing player was extremely fortunate or that you were badly outplayed.
- R – Runner Runner – this term is a situation where you need to make your hand both on the turn and the river in order to complete it. One example is when you hold two clubs and there is a single club on the flop, so you will need to draw a club on the turn and the river in order to complete a flush.
- S – String Bet – is an illegal play where a player attempts a partial bet and adds more chips in a second motion, without declaring the amount beforehand. It is illegal in controlled games as it can be used to gauge the reactions of opponents and gain an unfair advantage.
- T – Tanking – used when describing a person who takes long time to think before acting.
- W – Whiff – to completely miss your draw. It is a slang term used when the card you were looking for doesn’t come.
Poker slang reflects the rich and changing culture of the game and its broad player base, and it is more than just colorful jargon!
